NextArt Chicago 2012
LOCATION Chicago, Illinois
CLIENT Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. (MMPI)
PROGRAM Exhibition Design
AREA 100,000SM
STATUS Design 2012

*Designed w/ Studio Alex Lehnerer

The organizing concept behind the 2011 edition of NextArt Chicago, is to devise a plan that exists like a city. The fair takes place within the Chicago Merchandise Mart, providing a quite large floor plate, and the challenge for us was to organize this in a way that still feels human. We created a new form of art fair exhibition type, making it like a suburb, and town and like a village, with courtyards, avenues, boulevards, hideouts, and neighborhoods all coordinated together in order to allow for identity and way-finding by providing visual experience, and producing memories which can be referenced similar to how one navigates a town.

Included in Primitive Delights exhibition at University of Illinois-Chicago, November 2011.

Minor Colossus is nothing less than an essay on architecture; in which its fundamental manners are displayed, and its frontier exposed, defining a human practice that succeeds only when it confounds. Simultaneously grand and empty, meaningful and yet infinitely hollow, the promise of conflict seems to offer its only redeeming quality; its evacuation of technocratic purpose in an effort to be human. This effort continues an intermittant study into the architectural effects available through odd combination of graphic patternings with strange forms.

BUSAN OPERA HOUSE
LOCATION Busan, South Korea
CLIENT Busan Metropolitan City
PROGRAM Opera, Recital Hall, Public Plaza, Dining, Retail
AREA 34,938SM (Site) / 60,000SM (Building)
COST KRW130,000 million (US$140,500,000)
STATUS Design 2011 (Competition)

The design for the Busan Opera House relies on three main ideas:

To provide a strong urban statement in newly forming cultural district;
To develop a clear visual strategy for the identity of the Opera which is simultaneously familiar and never-before seen;
To create a unique building for the center of the cultural district with a contemporary architectural approach shaped to optimize active and passive energy use.

This project develops its personality by a combination of unique formal expression through the shape of the building, rational programmatic organization, and a curated graphic pattern (stripes) in order to produce a project that looks like nothing before it.

The project cantilevers its second level 5m above the entry level to allow for a very petit ground level footprint that enable the public to be welcomes by the building before even entering. This allows for a sequence from the pedestrian bridge that takes one over the creek, then onto the site, then within the buildings perimeter gallery sheltered from the elements by the cantilevered volume of the restaurant and convention spaces, to finally being within the major public lobby for the opera. The lobby is located within one of the glass stripes of the volume allowing for an impressive space and acts as the counterpart to the massive opaque volumes of the theaters.

This conceptual project was produced to explore the future potential effects that an architecture based on the science of protocells might offer. The work was part of an accompanying article in an issue of AD titled, "Protocell Architecture," edited by Neil Spiller and Rachel Armstrong. The main effect of the work is to investigate the natural extension of a buildings existing facade once introduce to protocell technology as a way in which to heal distressed facades, or enhance the cosmetic effects of a building.
